Painting

Creating, viewing and evaluating works of art are subjective experiences. For that reason, reaction to a particular painting can vary considerably from one individual to the next. Making a positive connection with the viewer is certainly one of the primary goals of every working artist.

I consider myself a representational painter in the realist tradition who also believes that artistic license is an important part of the creative process. It is the use of artistic license that allows artists to arrive at different interpretations when painting the same subject. I usually begin a painting without any detailed preliminary drawing, opting instead to use a single brush (not a small one) to establish the larger compositional elements. The addition of any necessary details and general tweaking is performed in the final stages of the painting. I work with a very limited palette usually consisting of the primaries and 2 or 3 additional colors which are determined by the composition itself. As a painter I will always consider myself a work in progress as perfection is often sought but rarely attained.
