Luding Meng

Luding Meng is well known for his involvement in the Tiananmen Square uprising of 1989 in which his sculpture, “The Goddess of Democracy” was erected as a symbol of justice and change, but was viewed negatively by the government and destroyed by troops a short time later. With such revolutionary experience to his back, Meng continues to express himself through painting in America and China. He voyeuristically displays images of youth, beauty, and promise juxtaposed with mirrors, walls, or even calm lakes. In this way Mr. Meng reminds his audience of the barriers that exist in all of our lives, whether they are as benign as the mirror we face each morning or as grandiose as the walls of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Meng’s insightful subject matter is matched only by his technical mastery. His figurative works are photographically real without losing the painterly quality that gives them their allure. It is truly amazing to see the incredible emotional response that Luding Meng’s paintings elicit from the viewer.
